We lead the UK’s diplomatic, development and consular work around the world. We employ around 17,000 staff in our global network of 281 offices worldwide. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride and in Milton Keynes.

Your role with us

We’re currently looking for an enthusiastic and committed Private Sector Development Adviser to join us at the British High Commission in Lusaka. Leading our work to support private sector-led growth and job creation, you’ll have a particular focus on unlocking investment and reform in Zambia’s growing energy sector. This important work will involve using all your diplomatic skills as you influence the policy, regulatory frameworks and market systems that will enable the development and delivery of a dynamic and inclusive private sector.

Building on the UK’s strong relationships with key Zambian institutions, including State House, ministries, financial institutions and business leaders, your main responsibility will be to drive delivery of the UK Zambia Green Growth Compact. This is our flagship economic partnership, and aims to coordinate the UK’s efforts to improve the business environment and attract responsible investment. Playing a leading role in shaping the energy sector to support Zambia’s transition to a greener, more resilient economy, you’ll promote renewable energy solutions, support regulatory reform and encourage private capital investment in infrastructure and services.

You’ll also be involved in the oversight of UK funded interventions that provide the technical assistance, grants and investment required to strengthen Zambia’s private sector. By supporting reforms and market development in energy, forestry, agriculture, mining and other important sectors, you’ll help to support our aims of inclusive growth, rural development and climate resilience.

Who we’re looking for

With the ability to influence change by expanding networks and building positive relationships with key external stakeholders, you’ll be ready to deliver the expert advice necessary to support our organisation’s objectives. Capable of providing a clear vision that advances the work we’re doing to develop Zambia’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), you’ll also have the skills to bring together different UK partners and major investors under the Green Growth Compact to ensure our collective efforts are driving growth.

You should also be prepared to advise partners on issues related to business environment reform and SME growth, work that will include offering advice to the Presidential Delivery Unit in State House and the Public Private Dialogue Forum.
